Where do the Hunts take Place? |
Our prairie dog hunts take place
on private lands, leased for the exclusive use of Wyoming High
Plains Safaris, LLC, which are located in central and eastern
Wyoming. |
|
How do I get there?
|
That depends on which hunt area
is selected. For our Eastern Hunt area, you may fly into the
Rapid City, South Dakota airport. For your convenience we can
arrange ground transportation from the airport to the Hunt area
for $50.00 per person round trip. For our Central Hunt, the Casper,
Wyoming airport is better located and we can arrange transportation
from there to our central hunt area for $25.00 per person round
trip. Rates and availability subject to change, so please reserve
in advance. |
What about ground transportation for the
hunt? |
We supply 4x4 transportation and
shooting benches. |
Do I need a license? |
There are no licenses required
to shoot prairie dogs. |
|
What is the recommended caliber size for
this Hunt?
|
There are certainly no caliber
restrictions, however, we recommend a rifle in the .223 to 22-250
caliber class for the bulk of your prairie dog hunting due to
the opportunity for a large volume of shooting. Many of our hunters
bring two or more rifles, alternating them, to allow the barrel
to cool on one while firing another. Also we encourage you to
bring along your favorite big game rifle for a unique opportunity
to practice long range shooting at reactive targets. Even if
you only fire 10-15 shots through it per day it can be a real
confidence builder for the next time you have to take a 300 yard
shot at that trophy big game animal. |
|
What is included for the Hunt fee?
|
With one guide for every two hunters
our experienced guides will get you into the most productive
areas and will help you with range estimation, wind judgment,
shot spotting and shooting tips. We supply local ground transportation
(4x4) with shooting benches and well prepared lunches in the
field along with cold drinks throughout the day.
Please note: The consumption of alcoholic beverages while
in the field will not be permitted. |
|
What is not included?
|
Not included are your breakfast
or dinner meals and or Motel / Hotel accommodations. The room
rates average approximately $50 for a single occupancy room and
$65 for a double occupancy room plus tax. We will arrange Motel
/ Hotel reservations for you and strive to get you the best rate
possible or we can provide you with the name and telephone number
of the Motel / Hotel if you wish to make your own reservations.
All of the Motels / Hotels we use have a good restaurant and
a lounge for your convenience. |
|
What should I bring?
|
Ammunition, on a normal day in
the prairie dog fields our hunters will fire an average of 200
rounds per day each, so bring plenty. It is also important that
the bullets or projectiles used be of soft point or hollow point
design. This is to minimize the possibility of a ricochet and
to cause quick humane kills on prairie dogs hit in otherwise
nonfatal parts of the body. Good binoculars are a must!
In addition, Hunters need only supply their personal gear,
rifles, binoculars and ammunition (which may be shipped to us
via UPS for your convenience and avoid airport hassles). However
with adequate notice we can provide for rent finely tuned, accurate,
varmint rifles for $25 per day and we can provide varmint ammunition
at competitive prices. |
What are the dates of the Hunts? |
We conduct prairie dog hunts from
June lst to August 25th. |
|
What is the cost of the Hunt?
|
Our rates are $400.00 per hunter
per day with a minimum of two hunters for two days. All hunts
are booked on a first come, first serve basis. A $400.00 deposit
per hunter is required to reserve your hunt dates and is non-refundable
unless cancellation is made 60 or more days prior to the scheduled
hunt date. The balance of your hunt fee is due upon your arrival
and no refund will be given for inclement weather conditions. |
